Third Culture Kids (TCKs) is the term that describes children who spend a significant part of their childhood as expats in a foreign country. Two sessions devoted to TCKs were offered to AIS parents in the library. The first discussion was help in December 2008. Dr. Edie Weitzman and Dr. Rebecca Silverstein made a presentation on general issues, such as experiences, advantages and problems third culture kids face. How multicultural environment affects the way TCKs communicate and function socially also was one of the main topics of the discussion.
During the second meeting on Friday, January 30, 2009, Dr. Roz Ezra , ESOL teacher, highlighted different areas of linguistic problems connected with TCKs: how to keep up with the native language, what techniques help TCKs study the foreign language and English as the second language, and others.
A group of families of different cultural backgrounds participated in the discussions.
The library is looking for your suggestions for other topics you want to discuss with professionals at our monthly meetings in the library. You can either post your comment in the blog, send us an email (mbrodsky@wbais.org) or come and talk to Marina in the library.
